Okay so my bf just found out he has a torn meniscus help?

so he went to the dr got and got an mri and he has a torn meniscus he wants to go back into kickboxing but will he be able to return if he gets surgery? is it permanent damage help me out plz and they said its a slight horizontal tear help plz thank you
